Originating from Indian subcontinent, the gujiya also known as karanji a rich treat for your taste buds while also proving to be a delightful way to satiate those midday sweet cravings.

This sweet melt-in-the-mouth treat enveloped within a crispy flour pastry is an essential part of many celebratory rituals in India, especially Diwali and Holi. Crisp and flaky gujiyas are traditionally prepared with Maida. Several studies have found Maida to be an unhealthy flour choice for regular consumption. While it is true that sweets are a guilty indulgence we all enjoy every once in a while, your favorite piping hot gujiyas don’t have to be unhealthy at all.

In fact, what if all it takes to turn the carbohydrate-rich maida gujiyas into healthier gujiyas was changing one ingredient? Just changing one ingredient can help you substitute regular maida gujiyas with something more wholesome. That magical ingredient is nothing but whole wheat flour!

Whole wheat flour is full of fiber and protein, which makes it the perfect choice to make rich, irresistible gujiyas for your entire family. With the help of this recipe, you can swap out maida with whole wheat flour and prepare the perfect treat for festivals such as Holi and Diwali.
